- a modest or low view of one's own importance; humbleness.
synonyms:modesty, humbleness, meekness, diffidence, unassertiveness
Looking at this definition, we move in a nation (by media examples) that are actual anti-humility. A capitalist Christmas culture has us wrapped in the belief that our self importance is what counts - we ask for certain things for Christmas, we expect certain gifts, and have a media expression that has us believing that our worth is measured by how many gifts we receive or how much money was spent on the gifts.
I guess I want to kick off this month by encouraging us, no matter what our faith background is, to return to the definition of humility, day after day, hour after hour, and minute by minute. We can have a meekness and humbleness about our movement in this world while having high self-esteem and clarity that we are powerful beings. Particularly during this time of the year - we can remember that there is a stillness in the air where we can quiet ourselves and reflect on our small contribution to this large world and not be caught up in the anti-humility of a capitalist Christmas season. That small contribution of humility actually might make the biggest difference in a time like this.
